It’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s a dream because I keep drifting in and out of sleep. At some point during my light slumber, Prince Kevon lays me onto a flat surface and covers me with a blanket, while a female voice I assume belongs to Princess Briar chastises him for letting me out of his sight.

My heart softens toward the princess. There’s a humanity to her that reminds me of Prince Kevon but a brutality to her that I don’t understand.

Someone drizzles a bitter liquid between my lips and cool fingers tend to my wounds. I can’t tell if they belong to Prince Kevon or Garrett. I drift in this state of semi-awareness as the vehicle rumbles beneath me and three sets of voices argue about how to approach Old Phangloria.

Prince Kevon says we shouldn’t broadcast our location, no matter how secure the network. Before I can mutter an agreement, my consciousness tumbles down into a dreamless sleep.

When I awaken, I’m lying on a hard bed, and the warm scent of cooked food mingles with a faint scent of antiseptic. My head no longer throbs, and all the aches and pains have vanished. I reach a tentative hand to my face and find no signs of heat and tenderness. Even my throat is back to normal.

I pull myself up to my elbows to find that I’m in a dome-shaped enclosure with a huge, transparent wall that overlooks a terraced mountain covered in dense rainforest and waterfalls. I sit up on the bed, wondering which part of the old world this dome emulates.

The wall behind me is white. Gentle blue lights illuminate cupboards filled with medical supplies. A silver trolley stands by a white door, holding a cast iron pot and a domed platter of sliced fruit. My mouth waters.

A knock sounds from the door. Prince Kevon pokes his head through the gap. As soon as our gazes meet, he steps inside, clad in the black uniform of a guard. “Did you sleep well?”

“Are we in the Botanical Gardens?” I ask.

“The forest where we found you was only ten miles from the Oasis.” He wheels the trolley to my side. “We’re in one of the garden’s infirmaries closest to the entrance to Old Phangloria.”

“Oh.” I stare out through the dome’s window at the waterfalls.

“You need to eat to kickstart your digestive system.” He pulls the lid off the iron pot, releasing a burst of herb and garlic-roasted chicken. “I wanted you to recover here to avoid bringing you into the old city in a vulnerable state.”

What he’s not saying is that I’ll be the only Harvester in Old Phangloria among hurt and angry Nobles who have lost friends, family, and their homes. Nobles who also watched me dump him on the Lifestyle Channel while admitting to being a Red Runner who infiltrated the palace to aid the rebels.

I exhale a breath and murmur my thanks for his considerate act. “What’s happening with the revolution?”

The corner of his lips quirk into a smile.
